Little League Football Officers' Manual

15 SELECTION

Refer to

Introduction
Children are selected from those who played in the trials to replace those who 'retired' at the end of last season. (For a new League, six complete new teams are selected.)

Rule 2.3

Preparation
The League Management Committee should already have decided the format of teams and sections for the coming season. All Managers should have agreed with the Secretary the vacancies in their team.

Section 14A

The selection meeting should be held as soon as possible after the final trial. Prior to the meeting, the Secretary will prepare a list of ineligible trialists which s/he will confirm with Team Managers prior to the selection process, so these trialists may be crossed off the list.

Rule 2.2.2.3

Selection Process
Having confirmed with Team managers their requirements, the selection can begin: -
The Secretary will shuffle six playing cards (ace to six).
The team which draws the ace will have first pick, the team which draws the two will have second pick and so on until the sixth team has made their selection.
This order is then reversed so that the team which had the sixth pick then makes the seventh pick. This process is continued until the team which originally drew the ace and had first pick has made the twelfth choice.
The cards are then shuffled again and the process continues until all vacancies have been filled.
The Team Managers may select any child from any age group providing they fulfil the correct age groupings for their team by the end of the meeting.
The Secretary should keep a list (specimen on request) for each team showing the existing players and ages and add each new player as s/he is selected so that errors may be avoided, and to assist in preparing team lists, letters etc. At various times during the selection process, it is wise to remind Managers of their remaining requirements.

Rule 2.3.2

After the meeting
The Secretary will send letters to both successful and unsuccessful applicants as soon as possible after the selection meeting.
It is recommended that a 'Code of Conduct' should be sent to all new players.
On no account should those present at the selection meeting divulge the selections made prior to the letters being posted. Leagues may wish to operate a reserve pool to accommodate those trialists not selected or start a junior section if enough children are available.
The Secretary will issue Managers with their new team list. Many Leagues organise a meeting for the new players and their parents, where such issues as membership and the principles of Little League Football can be reinforced.

Team Managers should promptly visit their new players and their families to: -

  • meet the player
  • encourage parental support
  • explain any training arrangements
  • check kit sizes
  • ask for Individual Memberships
  • collect the signed Code of Conduct
  • answer questions

Section 31
The Secretary should also inform the schools of selected players. Section 18

Dear

I am sorry to have to tell you that you have not been chosen to play in a team this year. However, your name has been placed on the Reserve List in case a vacancy arises during the season.

Next year, when you are a year older, you may have a better chance of getting into a team, and I will send you a Trials Application Form in good time for next year's trials.

Yours sincerely,

A Hancock
Secretary
